We are a Safe Sanctuary Compliant Church

Jesus said, “Whoever welcomes [a] child … welcomes me” (Matthew 18:5). Children are our present and our future, our hope, our teachers, our inspiration. They are full participants in the life of the church and in the realm of God.

God calls us to make our churches safe places, protecting children and other vulnerable persons from sexual and ritual abuse. God calls us to create communities of faith where children and adults grow safe and strong. (From The Book of Resolutions of The United Methodist Church – 2000, pp 180-181. Thus, in covenant with all United Methodist congregations, Canton First UMC has adopted a Safe Sanctuary Policy (Click Here to View the PDF) for reducing the risk of abuse of children, youth, and vulnerable adults in our church. It is the policy of Canton First United Methodist Church that all employees, volunteers, visitors, members, children, youth, and vulnerable adults be treated with respect, in an environment free from abuse, intimidation, humiliation, or insult. This policy’s purpose is to demonstrate Canton First United Methodist Church’s absolute commitment to the physical safety and spiritual growth of all the children, youth, and adults of the church.

Glenn and Kathy Hansen

Hospitality Team Members

As part of our Hospitality Team, Glenn volunteers as both Greeter and Usher and Kathy helps at the Welcome Desk. They have recently started the process of getting involved with the Homeless Coalition and have served during the summer months with the MUST Summer Lunch Program.

Glenn and Kathy feel they have been tremendously blessed and are blessed even more through giving back. They feel it is their calling to give back to others. Before joining Canton First UMC, they wanted a church where they could be a part of the church family.

"Through volunteering we have been strengthened both spiritually and emotionally. We benefit by being surrounded with other believers and learn through their openness to share and be transparent. We have also had the opportunity to speak with others and have found many commonalities and interests that are in alignment with where we have lived and similar life experiences. We've learned that we are all in this together and together we can all make a difference. As we have all heard, 'it takes a village.'"

Glenn and Kathy shared that through volunteering they have been strengthened both spiritually and emotionally. They benefit by being surrounded by other believers and learning through their openness to share and be transparent. Kathy said, "Because of those who reached out to us at Canton First, we have been able to reach out to others."
