ADVENT AT CANTON FIRST

What is the difference between Advent and Christmas?  The season of Advent, which comes from the Latin word adventus meaning “coming” or “visit," begins four Sundays before Christmas and ends on Christmas Eve. During Advent, we prepare for, and anticipate, the coming of Christ. We remember the longing of the Jews for a Messiah and our own longing for, and need of, forgiveness, salvation and a new beginning. Even as we look back and celebrate the birth of Jesus in a humble stable in Bethlehem, we also look forward to anticipating the second coming of Christ as the fulfillment of all that was promised by his first coming.

Although we are accustomed to celebrating Christmas on a single day, in the Christian tradition the Christmas season lasts from sundown on December 24 through Epiphany of the Lord (January 6). This is sometimes referred to as "the twelve days of Christmas."

Not everyone is cheerful at the Christmas holidays. Dealing with the death of a loved one, facing life after divorce or separation, coping with the loss of a job, living with cancer or other disease that puts a question mark over the future, and a number of other human situations make parties and joviality painful for many people, especially during the holidays. The Longest Night worship is a reflective time to acknowledge our frailty and at the same time embrace the hope found in Christ.
